When to Re-Pack

All packing sets wear out eventually. The packing should be replaced when leakage control cannot be attained by adjustment of the gland If control is lost and the gland is “bottomed out” (cannot be tightened any further) and the pump must be run until a planned shut down, rings may be added AS A  TEMPORARY EXPEDIENT. The packing set must be replaced at the earliest convenient time since the lantern ring will soon be pushed out of the proper position and seal water flow will be reduced or cut off. Lubrication will no longer be consistent, and accelerated sleeve wear will occur.
